Japan satire

Definition of "satire" from Columbia Encyclopedia:

term applied to any work of literature or art whose objective is ridicule. It is more easily recognized than defined. From ancient times satirists have shared a common aim: to expose foolishness in all its guises—vanity, hypocrisy, pedantry, idolatry, bigotry, sentimentality—and to effect reform through such exposure.

Below are four links to videos on Japan. These videos are intended to educate foreigners on aspects of traditional Japanese culture (or are they?). Each member of your table should watch one of the videos and write a short reflection.

Questions for reflection:

1. Is this satire? Why or why not?
2. What aspects of Japanese culture are being ridiculed? What traits? What customs?
3. In what way does this clip portray Japanese culture positively?
4. Does this clip affirm any of your assumptions about Japan? Does it contradict any of your assumptions about Japan?
